Playing 'Possum

We're very used to possums around here. They love to live in the crawl space under the house, and for years they have come up onto the back porch to eat cat food. When they start coming around, Miss Ginger baits her live trap with a Little Debbie Oatmeal Cake (possums love those and you can smoosh them onto the trigger so they can't steal the bait!)

Catching them is like shooting fish in a barrel, and the next day I call the city and they come in a truck, pick the possum up, and take him to the city's "possum playground". At least that's what I tell myself. They're kinda of gross but they are warm-blooded animals and I have a hard time thinking of God's creatures as "disposable". And it's not like they come in the house are anything.

Miss G caught 5 of them last spring, and we thought we were done for the year, but this fall apparently a new family has moved in. They always come up on the back porch and eat Nog's food, but now this one is sleeping in his bed!!!

Is that some unmitigated gall, or what? Guess we'll have to get the trap out tomorrow!

Oh no, I can't believe he took over Nog's bed! A lot of people hate them, but I find them kind of cute...but then I'm a sucker for just about any critter. Sheeba is an indoor kitty, so there's never any food outside for the possums. Sometimes it seems like they just want to come up and hang out for a while! I'm glad you don't poison them--they're still living creatures, and I can't bear to see any of them hurt!

Love, Beth

They really aren't so cute up close, but they are are living creatures. I could never poison or hurt them! They don't appear to be destructive and they don't seem to bother Nog in the least, so I usually jsut let them be, until they start to multiply. Then I still can't harm them- I just "send them away". Note sure what the city does with them, but I am sure I don't want to know. I am reasonably confident that it's as humane as possible, to avoid potential negative publicity, if nothing else!

Wow i am amazed that the possom sat there long enough to let you take the picture. The ones around our house run away so fast you barely see them! Linda

Funny takeover! Make sure the bed is clean before nog uses it! I met a lady in a store with a possum in her basket. All tucked in like a baby- Imagine my surprise. They have wicked teeth. Dannelle

Being a farm girl I used to hate Possum. But then I moved to Chicago and didnt see one for about 10 years. Then out of the blue one started appearing on my back porch. I would come out the backk door and it would just be sitting there. I didnt bother it, it didnt bother me. It reminded me of home.
